honeybee dissection
Pollination is the the process of pollen being transferred from male part to female part. Through this process fertilization and reproduction occur. Honeybees contribute more than 15 million dollars to the U.S. economy annually by keeping vital crops alive. They have an important role in making sure that crops such as almonds and various fruits are pollinated. 100% of almond crops rely on honey bees to pollinate and reproduce. A high percentage of blueberries, apples, cucumbers, avocados, and onions as well as other crops rely on honeybees to survive. If the bees die then the crops die and that will take millions of dollars out of our economy. Not only do they contribute to our economy but they also supply us with some of the food we love.
For this project I chose to learn more about a bees anatomy and how individuals contribute to the hive. I learned about what parts of a honeybee allow them to benefit themselves from pollinating while also contributing to the crops. One specific example of a body part that is used in this process is a pollen basket attached to the bees leg where they store pollen. At exhibition I had a display of actual bee body parts labeled next to enlarged pictures of each body part accompanied by an important fact about that body part. I am most proud of the final display that I made because it was a good way to communicate this information to the people at the exhibition. My project would have been better if I had more of the information I learned on my final product. I forgot to present my research notes next to my project and this would have shown the parents the process that I went through to get my final product.
